How do brake pads work? They ensure optimal braking by rubbing against the brake discs: they slow the rotation, which in turn slows the wheels. This rubbing subjects the brake pads to very high temperatures, up to 800°C. This means they have to be able to handle very large temperature changes. And over time, this rubbing leads to wear. In modern cars, a warning light on the dashboard will indicate that this wear has reached critical levels.
The consequences of too much wear
If brake pads become worn, there is a risk of damaging the discs, which has two downsides:
- damaged brake discs = danger! The braking system of your car no longer performs optimally and you risk losing control of it.
- Replacing the brake discs on a vehicle is an expensive task, as these parts are much more expensive than brake pads.
