Why is it important to have your tyres inflated properly?
And what is the right pressure for your tyres?
Monsieur Pneus will explain it in detail.

The consequences

Driving with under- or over-inflated tyres can have a big impact on your safety and your wallet. It affects:

  • The stability of your car and its grip on the road: the tyres won’t grip as well on the road.
  • The stability of your car and its grip on the road: the tyres won’t grip as well on the road.
  • Fuel consumption: under-inflation increases the tyres’ rolling resistance and so increases fuel consumption.
  • Your safety: under-inflated tyres may even fail. Danger!
  • Tyre longevity: if the pressure is 20% too low, the life span of the tyre is reduced by 25%. An under-inflated tyre wears on the sides, an over-inflated tyre causes wear in the grooves from the centre of the treads.
Monsieur Pneus’ tips and tricks

The right pressure

The ideal pressure is indicated by the vehicle’s manufacturer. You can generally find this information on the inside of the driver’s door, and sometimes also on the back of the flap covering the fuel cap, and of course in the car manual.

In certain cases, it is advisable to slightly increase the recommended pressure:

  • If you are transporting heavy baggage or equipment.
  • If the route includes a lot of turns.
  • If the driver has a very sporty driving style.

Electronic valves: the safety benefits

All new car tyres (since 2014) are required to be fitted with an electronic valve. How do they work? The valve sensor (TPMS or Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) continuously measures the pressure of the tyre. If the pressure drops significantly, the systems sends a signal to the on-board computer to inform the driver.

Monsieur Pneus also checks the state of this valve

  • which should be changed every 2 years
  • eand the sensors – which should be replaced every 4 to 5 years
  • when doing the check-up of your tyres, free of charge.

For this, we have an ad hoc schedule (for each manufacturer) which is updated each year.
